Pygmy hippos are rare and elusive, living a mostly solitary and secretive life along rivers and in swamps. They rarely vocalize and are primarily active at night, which makes them difficult to observe in the wild. Because of this, much of what scientists know about them comes from zoo-based research. One notable example is Moo Deng, who was born in July 2024 at a zoo and has helped researchers learn more about this mysterious species.
